The Silver Screen Storms the Stage, Part Two – Back to the Movies
J. Wynn Rousuck, former Baltimore Sun theater critic and current theater critic, WYPR
The blockbuster musicals, “The Producers” and “Hairspray,” launched a seemingly relentless trend of turning movies into Broadway musicals. This illustrated lecture examines precedents for this trend as well as a newer phenomenon: Movies adapted into Broadway musicals that are then adapted into movies. Not surprisingly, “The Producers” and “Hairspray” were once again ahead of this curve. In these unprecedented times when Broadway is shut down, Judy Rousuck reminds us of the magic of musicals. And, because that magic is currently only available on the small screen, she will offer her recommendations for at-home viewing.
