Art and the African Slave Trades
Kevin Tervala, associate curator of African art at the Baltimore Museum of Art
Between 1400 and 1900, the African continent was impacted by four separate slave trades. Although the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade is arguably the best known, enslaved Africans were also taken across the Sahara Desert, the Red Sea, and the Indian Ocean. This lecture explores how African artists (and the societies of which they were a part) responded to this violent and rapid depopulation of the continent. Looking at art historical case studies from today’s Benin, Morocco, Tanzania, and Democratic Republic of Congo, members will also learn about how the four slave trades altered the course of African art history.
