Changing Perspectives on the "Self" by Women Artists
Aneta Georgievska-Shine, professor of art history, University of Maryland
Reception 10:30 - 11:00 am
Looking back at the history of women artists, one is struck by the degree to which they have embraced self-portraiture, both in straight-forward portraits of themselves and in allegorical compositions that allow them to affirm their creative agency. This lecture surveys the changing perspectives on the creative "self" from the female point of view, looking at examples that range from the Renaissance to the present.
