HYBRID IN-PERSON AND ONLINE PROGRAM
Lines are lineages …
Lisa Blas, painter, educator, creator of Monday's Image Weekly blog, adjunct faculty at New York Academy of Art
Reception 1 - 1:30 pm
In this talk, artist and educator Lisa Blas will trace the origin stories of women and abstraction to reach new perspectives of painting in a global context. The program will begin with an overview of a groundbreaking exhibition that highlighted three painters working in relative isolation, setting the stage for future exhibitions on women artists in the 21st Century. We will learn how poets and historians contextualized their production via overlapping themes of nature, materiality, and feminism, in addition to how contemporary artists have responded to their work since. These thematic trajectories will lead to the introduction of a Belgian painter and professor of art, active in the post-war era, whose work radically traversed the spaces of abstraction, minimalism, and architecture yet is largely unknown to an American audience. Through this lecture, we will navigate renewed routes of abstraction to expand the story further afield.
