Members' Day Trip: New York City: Sargent and Sherald, Portraiture Perfected 6/5/2025

Thursday, June 5, 2025

Departure: 7:00 am, Return approximately 8:30 pm

Pick up location: Central Presbyterian Church in Towson

Please join us for an opportunity to further experience the art of portraiture as probed by two phenomenal artists from two very different periods and perspectives. Our day begins at the Met with self-guided enjoyment of John Singer Sargent and Paris. Approximately 190 works track the development of the young artist during his transformational decade in Paris that culminated with the magnificently scandalous Madame X from 1884. One cannot help but notice the effects of Parisian society on Sargent as he sought his mature style. After lunch on our own, the bus will take us downtown to the Whitney for guided tours of Amy Sherald: American Sublime, a mid-career survey of this amazing young artist’s work. 50 of her intensely focused portraits challenge us to meet her poised and self-possessed sitters on their terms. Isolated and iconic images such as those of Breonna Taylor and Michelle Obama encourage us to rethink Black identity.

Snacks, a box supper, and wine will be provided during travel.

ASG members only, $330 Trip Fee.
$231 maximum refund (70%); no refunds after 5/29/2025
