Members’ Virtual Tour: Through a Norton Lens: A History of Photography

Glenn Tomlinson, William Randolph Hearst Curator of Education with the Norton Museum of Art

The Norton Museum of Art, located in West Palm Beach, Florida, was founded in 1941 by Ralph Hubbard Norton (1875-1953) and his wife Elizabeth Calhoun Norton (1881-1947). It was the first art museum in South Florida. Founded on the Norton’s personal collection, the museum’s permanent collection now consists of more than 8200 artworks in five curatorial areas: European, American, Chinese, Contemporary and Photography. The Photography collection has grown dramatically since a gift of over 600 photographs by Baroness Jeanne von Oppenheim established the collection in the 1990s. Today, the collection encompasses the history of the medium that changed the way we see, beginning with pioneering work by William Henry Fox Talbot, classic images by Edward Weston, Dorothea Lange, and Gordon Parks, and including contemporary artists like Shirin Neshat and Graciela Iturb.
