VIRTUAL TRIP: The Hamilton Street Club's "African American Culture honored in NYC Public Art” with Sylvia Laudien-Meo

VIRTUAL TRIP - ONLINE PROGRAM THROUGH ZOOM

The Hamilton Street Club invites you to join their tour “African American Culture honored in NYC Public Art” with Sylvia Laudien-Meo as a guest.

From The Hamilton Street Club:

On Saturday, September 25th at 10:30 a.m. we will take a virtual trip to New York City and we hope you will join us for this most compelling tour “African American Culture honored in NYC Public Art”. Afterward we will have time for a Q and A with our guide, Sylvia Laudien-Meo.

African-Americans have been part of New York since the days of New Amsterdam. Public art throughout the city reflects the changing dynamics: a marker for the original slave market has only been set up recently; the African Burial Ground had been built over and neglected until its discovery in the 1990s and now is graced with a very impressive memorial. Several 19th century sculptures include often controversial representations of African Americans, but it’s only in recent times that we are catching up on filling in the historical gaps and honoring people like Sojourner Truth, Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass Increasingly more black artists have recently been commissioned to create most inspirational public art works for NYC, performative, temporary as well as permanent. Artists include Pope L., Martin Puryear, Kara Walker, Hank Willis Thomas, Nari Ward, Simone Leigh and many others.

Sylvia Laudien-Meo, our guide, has given two previous tours for our members and guests. She is a freelance Art Historian who works in and around New York City specializing in Modern and Contemporary art, with a strong focus on Public Art. She teaches art history at Fairleigh Dickinson University and has spent many years working as a museum educator at MoMA, the Guggenheim and the Jewish Museum.

Tickets are $15 with a processing fee of $1.05 (Total fee $16.05)
