English filmmaker David Lean (1908-1991) started his career as an editor, eventually pivoting to work behind the camera with his 1942 directorial debut, In Which We Serve, the first of four screen partnerships with Noël Coward. After more than a decade delivering British stories centered on the British Isles (including two Dickens adaptations), Lean branched out in 1955 with Summertime, which began his collaboration with large American studios. And then, in 1957, Lean directed The Bridge on the River Kwai, which brought him international fame and the first of his two Best Director Oscars (he was awarded the second for his next film, 1962’s Lawrence of Arabia). The Bridge on the River Kwai also marked a significant increase in the length of his movies, as well as the size of his cinematic canvas. From then until the end of his working life, Lean was known for the epic drive of his vision and the equally epic dimensions of his frame.
In our 2025 series, we offer 6 films from Lean’s œuvre, covering every stage of his career. We launch our program with Kwai—for a taste of what is to come—but then circle back to 1945’s Brief Encounter before working our way forward again. The next four films are, in order: Summertime (1955), Lawrence of Arabia (1962), Doctor Zhivago (1965), and A Passage to India (1984), Given the duration of four of the movies, we will begin each screening at 12:30pm, and on the longer days will break things up with an intermission. Please join us for what promises to be another exciting summer as we explore and celebrate the work of this legendary director.
The summer film series is created in partnership with The Renaissance Institute.
$10 fee for guests or $40 for six films (No fee for ASG/RI members, or ASG subscribers)
