Ellen Lupton is a designer, writer, and amateur baker. She wonders how classic color theory applies to baking. For centuries, artists have studied the science of color while bending the rules in the real world of the studio. The red-yellow-blue color wheel that we are taught in school falls short when applied to the actual materials of paint on canvas or buttercream on cake. Bakers use natural and artificial dyes as well as plant essences to tell stories about love, ritual, and celebration. “Strawberry” is more than a fruit; it is a myth embodied in many shades of red and pink. This playful talk brings design history and color science to your kitchen. It will intrigue anyone who has an eye for color and a taste for experimenting with food. Learn about the color concepts of Wassily Kandinsky, Hilma af Klint, and other artists—illustrated with cakes and cookies.
