MEMBERS' DAY TRIP: The Art of Portraiture at the National Gallery
with Aneta Georgievska-Shine, professor of art history, University of Maryland
April 24, 2025
Our first stop is the National Gallery of Art where we will join Aneta Georgievska-Shine, professor of art history at the University of Maryland, for a tour focusing on the art of portraiture. This program concludes the April lecture series on the evolution of this pictorial genre from the Renaissance to the present. Our tour is organized chronologically. We will begin with the Italian Renaissance galleries, continue to those showcasing Dutch and Flemish portraits of the 17th century, and conclude by looking at 19th-century portraits in France and the United States.
At 1 p.m., we will travel to the Smithsonian American Art Museum to view Pictures of Belonging: Miki Hayakawa, Hisako Hibi, and Mine Okubo. This exhibition presents an in-depth look at “three trailblazing Japanese American women artists and asserts their rightful place in American Art.”
We will return to Baltimore at 3:30, arriving at 5:30. Lunch is on your own. Options include dining facilities at the National Gallery of Art or the Kogod Café at SAAM.
Members-only, registration is required (limited to 30 people); trip fee is $95.
