WEBINAR - ONLINE PROGRAM THROUGH ZOOM

Peggy Guggenheim & the Art of Collecting Part #2

Joseph Cassar, professor of art, University of Maryland University College and the New York Times Knowledge Network

In the second lecture of the series Joseph Cassar will explore Peggy Guggenheim’s life as an active collector in France, England and eventually back to New York. Her first gallery in London the “Guggenheim Jeune” operated from 1938-1939. During the mid 1940’s she operated “Art of this Century” gallery in New York. By this time, her active pursuit of iconic works by newly established European artists and her discovery of up and coming American Abstract Expressionists was well known. Her success as a collector and gallerist lead to her return to Venice in 1948 to present her collection at the Venice Biennale and to establish The Peggy Guggenheim Collection in a Venetian palazzo the following year, solidifying her importance in the world of 20th century art. A brief critical analysis of the highlights of her collection will include discussion of works by Max Ernst, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali, Hans Arp, Marcel Duchamp, Alberto Giacometti, Yves Tanguy, Alexander Calder, Jackson Pollock, Joan Miro and others.
