Cézanne and the Human Figure: from Portraits to Abstractions
Aneta Georgievska-Shine, professor of art history, University of Maryland
Cézanne’s simplified renderings of faces and gestures are often seen as an aspect of his aloofness and distance. Is he a painter of “human still lifes”, as it is sometimes noted? Or are his portraits another powerful testimony of his lifelong search for the meeting point between representation and abstraction? Georgievska-Shine will discuss these questions and offer insight in this program on Cézanne’s work on the human form.
