Baltimore Arts Outside the Box

Dr. Leslie King Hammond, professor emerita, Maryland Institute College of Art

This lecture will introduce the audience to the speaker’s journey from the art world of New York City to the maker arts culture of Baltimore City. Dr. King Hammond explains that “my career in the art world - professionally, academically and artistically - has been diverse, rich and fascinating. Often, it has been an unpredictable adventure to exact meaning, purpose and sense of self in the much contested world of the 20th and 21st centuries.” Baltimore’s distinctive creative community was instrumental in inspiring Dr. King Hammond to write a book about the critical, under-represented, and, too often, dismissed role of this city in the broader narrative of regional American art traditions. Dr. King Hammond will present an eye opening investigation into the legacy and future of Baltimore’s uniquely innovative arts and culture.
