“NOW” - Baltimore Arts Revealed
Dr. Leslie King Hammond, professor emerita, Maryland Institute College of Art
One of the untold stories of Baltimore City - and its adjacent counties of Anne Arundel, Harford, and Baltimore County - is that this region evolved from its primal development as one of the earliest American urban centers of artistry and innovation. This lecture will present some of the many Baltimore ‘firsts’ in the world of American art and culture. Baltimore is a site and center of maker cultures that was created, built, and made by artists, artisans, crafters, innovators, tinkerers and makers. This story is not just about known and recognized artists. An equally important part of the story addresses the ‘anonymity of women’s work’ and the ‘invisible labor’ of the untold numbers of individuals of African descent who were instrumental in the building and formation of Baltimore as a site of creative innovation and ingenuity. The distinctiveness of this unique ‘maker’ culture positions this city within the legacy of American regional arts traditions but also “outside the box”.
